Asbestos Abatement – 221 Central Avenue

Shaping the Future of Johnstown, PA

Overview

Asbestos Abatement – 221 Central Avenue

Asbestos remediation has been successfully completed at the former Cambria-Rowe Business College building, located at 221 Central Avenue in Johnstown. The property, owned by the Johnstown Redevelopment Authority, has been vacant since 2016 and is now positioned for its next chapter.

With environmental remediation finalized, the Authority is exploring options for the future of the building, including potential sale or redevelopment. Discussions have taken place with an interested party, and outreach to additional stakeholders, including the Greater Johnstown School District, may also be considered as part of evaluating viable reuse opportunities.

The asbestos abatement project was funded through a $200,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. The work was completed under budget at approximately $176,000. In accordance with grant requirements, the remaining funds are being returned to the Commonwealth to be reallocated to other eligible projects.

The completion of this critical remediation step represents meaningful progress toward returning the property to productive use and advancing ongoing revitalization efforts in the city.
