Bruce G. Haselrig, Sr., serves as the Secretary of the Johnstown Redevelopment Authority. He is a lifelong resident of The City of Johnstown. Bruce received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (B.S., Secondary Education, Social Sciences; M.A., History). As a letterman in wrestling, football and track at IUP, he was a member of the college’s first football PSAC playoff team. Haselrig is a Vietnam Era Veteran of the United States Army, trained as an artillery surveyor. He taught at his alma mater, the Greater Johnstown School District, for three years while coaching football, wrestling, and track.  He became a member of the Student Affairs staff at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and with the strong support of the UPJ administration he started the varsity wrestling program, serving as the first Wrestling Coach.

He is very active in the Greater Johnstown community through his service on local boards/ committees and working on special projects. He has been involved in the research of the early history of African Americans in Johnstown as a founding member of the African American Heritage Society, Inc., participated in the Johnstown Area Heritage Association’s, African American History Project, is a member of the Johnstown Advisory Council to the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, having served as Chairperson for 14 years. He is an active board member of the Greater Johnstown Minority Scholars Club, Chairperson, Cambria County Sports Hall of Fame Committee, past member of the Unity Coalition of Southern Alleghenies, Cambria County Community Action Council, Inc., a life member of the Johnstown Unit of the NAACP in which he served as Treasurer and Freedom Fund Banquet Committee Chairperson. He served as Chairperson of the Johnstown Citizens Police Review Committee for ten years. He has served on the boards of the Keystone Economic Development Corporation, American Cancer Society, Keystone Chapter of the American Red Cross, Hiram G. Andrews Center Act 101 Advisory Board, the Alternative Community Resource Program and BottleWorks Arts on 3rd Avenue.

Bruce had a distinguished career in higher education administration. As a student affairs practitioner, he could refine his style by providing workshops for students, faculty and staff in the areas of student development, multiculturalism and diversity issues. He is a former classroom teacher who has designed, implemented, partnered and presented sessions, workshops, and training for colleges, universities, community-based organizations, school districts, and the for- profit business sector. He has given back to his profession by presenting topics of interest at professional conferences. As a member of the Vice President for Student Affairs’ cabinet, reporting directly to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, he was responsible for Student Union operations and for providing cohesive and ongoing leadership in efforts to improve continually, the quality of campus life (student activities) on the Johnstown Campus of The University of Pittsburgh. He led efforts to initiate and implement new programs/services to meet the needs of a diverse student population. He maintained his ties to higher education by serving on several fund raising committees at Pitt-Johnstown.

Quite active in professional organizations, he was a member of the Association of College Unions International (ACUI), serving as a member of the national Committee on Multi-Ethnic Programs and the Coordinator of Volunteers for Region IV. Other memberships included the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA), Association of Student Judicial affairs (ASJA), the Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Education (PBCOHE), and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). Mr. Haselrig was awarded the Regis A. Cox Memorial Award, by the Association of College Unions International, for the development and promotion of multiculturalism within the area of student development, and was named the African- American Male of the Year, 2002, at the Greater Johnstown Annual Black Family Weekend, “For Outstanding Community Service to the People of Cambria County.” He was awarded the Freedom Award for his efforts by the Johnstown Unit NAACP. His contribution and work ethic has been recognized and honored by the University of Pittsburgh as the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Staff Excellence in Service to Community, and the President’s Award for Excellence in Service, by the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He was given the Outstanding Service Award for his contributions to the Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Education. Bruce and wife Ednita are the parents of three adult children, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Upon his retirement from UPJ, Haselrig was hired by the City of Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 2006 as the Assistant City Manager/City Clerk with specific responsibilities for the Parking Department, Human Resources, and City Council Clerk. Immersed in a wealth of challenging opportunities Bruce relied on a strong veteran staff to shorten his learning curve into city government. Everyday was a “learning day”. Upon the resignation of the City Manager, the City of Johnstown Council selected Haselrig to be Interim City Manager until a national search could be completed. Haselrig served as Interim City Manager of Johnstown, from October, 2009 through February, 2010. As the chief administrative officer of the city, daily responsibilities required managing a City of 26,000 citizens with 125 employees. He served dutifully until a permanent manager was in place. He is Founder and President of The Bruce Haselrig Group, civility, diversity and equity consulting group.

As a PIAA and NCAA wrestling official he has been an active member of the Cambria-Somerset Chapter of PIAA Wrestling Officials organization, serving as president, interpreter, and secretary/ treasurer. As a high school wrestler at Johnstown High School, he was District 6 runner-up while a member of the Trojans only D6 Team Championship. He has been District 6 Wrestling Rules Interpreter for 28 years and was Assistant Supervisor of Officials at the PIAA State Wrestling Championships for 8 years. He has worked numerous high school district and regional tournaments while officiating at 18 PIAA State Wrestling Championships and 3 PIAA Team Championships. He is past President of the Board of Directors, (NCAA) Eastern Wrestling League Officials Association; a member since 1975. He has served as an official’s observer for the Big12 and Big 10. He also served as a the third party video reviewer. He has been fortunate to be selected to officiate the PSAC Championships (9), NCAA Division II Championships (6), the NAIA Championships (3), and numerous NCAA Division I (EWL, ACC, Colonial), II and III regional qualifying tournaments. He serves as Head Official to the PA Junior Wrestling (PJW) Championships, Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association (MAWA), National United Wrestling Association for Youth (NUWAY), and numerous other tournaments.

He has been awarded many honors in recognition of his diligent efforts to recruit, evaluate and train officials to improve the quality of officiating in wrestling. He has been inducted into the Pennsylvania Chapter, National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Hall of Fame, selected as “Man of the Year” on several occasions, most notably by the PIAA District Six Coaches Association, and the Inter-County Wrestling Conference. The National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association (NFIOA) named him the Outstanding Wrestling Official for the State of Pennsylvania (for outstanding service and unselfish devotion to interscholastic athletics). He was inducted into the Cambria County Sports Hall of Fame, the Indiana University of PA Sports Hall of Fame, the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame and the District Six Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Recently he was awarded the Mario J. Donnangelo Distinguished Service Ward by the PIAA. This award is the highest honor the PIAA bestows on registered sports officials.
