Underground Fuel Tank Removed at Former Sheesley Supply Site, Advancing Hornerstown Revitalization Efforts

Another important step has been completed in the ongoing beautification of the former Sheesley Supply Co. property at 837 Horner Street in Johnstown’s Hornerstown neighborhood.

Under contract with the Johnstown Redevelopment Authority, crews from DMS Environmental successfully removed a 10,000-gallon underground diesel fuel tank from the site. The work required excavation around an unexpected concrete wall, but the tank was fully removed, the excavation backfilled, and the ground leveled. Follow-up soil testing confirmed there was no fuel contamination.

The fuel tank removal is part of a broader, multi-phase remediation effort. In 2024, the Redevelopment Authority received more than $400,000 from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies to demolish the former structures on the property and complete environmental cleanup. Demolition was finalized in March 2025. When the underground tank was discovered after the structures were razed, the Authority utilized U.S. Environmental Protection Agency brownfield funds—approximately $30,000—to ensure its proper removal.

The Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority, which owns the property due to its proximity to the Jim Mayer Riverswalk Trail, is now evaluating future plans for the site. Discussions include coordinating redevelopment efforts with adjacent parcels to create a cohesive vision for this section of the neighborhood.

These continued partnerships and cleanup efforts represent meaningful progress toward revitalizing the area and enhancing community assets along the Riverswalk corridor.
